How do I light a fire?

Posted on

There are many ways to light a fire. From my experience find that the following tips will help one in lighting a fire first time.

  1. Open both air vents and stove doors 30 minutes before you light it. This will allow air inside the stove to come to room temperature.

  2. It’s best to leave a good bed of ash in the stove from previous fires. This will help insulate the fire bed and make it easier to light.

  3. Crumple old newspapers into several big balls and lay on them on the fire bed.

  4. Scatter kindling sticks over the newspaper balls.

  5. Add a few small dry logs preferably with a split face.

  6. Light the newspaper at the bottom and in different places if you can.

  7. Close the door unless manufacturer’s instructions state that you leave a gap of 1 inch.

  8. When the fire has taken hold, open the door very slowly and add more fuel possibly larger logs and put them on top of the fire carefully and close the door. At this point you can close the bottom vent but leave the top one open. For smokeless coal leave the bottom vent open and only close the top one.
